With three days and less than 150 miles to go (if all goes well), I got to thinking about things I’ll miss. I’ll certainly miss the adventure of something new everyday. The landscape changed constantly as did the towns and buildings along the way. I never knew what was around the next corner and it made the miles fly by. I’ll certainly miss my riding buddies Mike and Charlie who have been fun to be around and supportive beyond measure along the way. I hope they feel the same way about me. I’ll also miss the other riders who came in and out of our lives along the way, sometimes more than once, and were kindred spirits and to a person joyful, upbeat and supportive. I’ll also miss the characters we met in almost every town. I don’t think we ever laughed at them, but they certainly made the trip humorous. That being said, there are a few things I won’t miss. Sleeping on the hard ground, which even a mat didn’t totally alleviate. And I won’t miss the trucks, particularly double dump trucks, log trucks and diesel pick-ups which are inordinately loud and smell. These last guys succeeded in “coal rolling” me three times. That’s where they shoot black smoke all over you…on purpose and sometimes take a picture. I suspect there’s humor in doing it, but not so much in receiving it.
